Chamber  Message

With spring’s arrival there are always so many new things and events to look forward to.  This is especially true with a long hard winter behind us.  There was certainly not much “Chamber of Commerce Weather” over the last few months.

So what is new and upcoming with the Chamber?  The Chamber is structured around five main committees, in addition to Green Days.  Each of these committees has a new chairperson this year:

Ambassadors:  Morgan Kirkeby – Stoney Creek Inn
Communications:  Carol Warren – Progress Industries
Leadership Development:  Jim Casey – Johnston Community School District
Member Outreach:  Mike Ginther – Middendorf Insurance Associates
Member Success:  Jason Parnell – Polk County Bank

Since the Chamber is heavily dependant on volunteers it has been great to see these individuals step forward.  They have already implemented many new ideas and are building on the fine work done by the predecessors.  I would like to thank those that have led these committees in the past:  Madilyn Allender (Johnston Community Greetings), Cheri Burns (ChildServe), and Paul Jacobson (Charter Bank).  In particular the Chamber would like to thank Madilyn for her role with the Ambassadors.  Over the last several years she has scheduled all of the Chamber’s ribbon cuttings, and made sure that the Ambassadors have been on hand to greet members and visitors at the Chamber’s events and activities.

The Chamber has a busy spring season ahead.  Three new businesses will hold ribbon cuttings in April and May.  The Chamber will sponsor activities such as Luncheons, Breakfast Before Business, Business After Hours, and a Marketing Workshop.  In addition the Chamber, led by Scott Kahler (Kahler &Co.), continues to participate in the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s legislative agenda.

Spring is also an opportunity for the Chamber to recognize the fine job done by our schools.  The Chamber is busy planning for the annual Educator Appreciation Reception that will be held May 7 at the Holiday Inn on Merle Hay.  Mary Miller of Polk County Bank has a committee of volunteers hard at work to make this year’s event a special one, The Johnston Schools will also honor their retiring employees at this event.

The Chamber urges you to get involved and participate in our activities.  Winter is over, spring is here, and there are many new things to do.  If you have any questions regarding how you can get involved please call Heather Wilcox at the Chamber office (276-9064).

Road Improvement Funding Proposal Advanced
The Johnston City Council is currently considering a proposed policy that would guide future decisions about the funding of road improvements associated with development projects.  The proposed policy would reduce the per lineal foot of a road improvement charged to a developer from $206.50 to $131.57.  It would also allow for the use of a petition and waiver as a way for a developer to satisfy the requirement of developer participation in the reconstruction of an adjacent collector/arterial roadway.  You can download the staff report for more a more detailed description of the proposed policy.

The proposed policy seems to be favorable to development and comparable with the policies of neighboring communities. JEDCO and Chamber members are encouraged to communicate with members of the Council about this topic prior to the next Council meeting on April 7, 2008.

Pioneer Hi-Bred Creates High Quality Jobs
JEDCO has been pleased to work with Pioneer and the Greater Des Moines Partnership in support of a High Quality Jobs program application submitted to the Iowa Department of Economic Development
.  The Johnston City Council is scheduled to consider a resolution supporting the project at their next meeting.  The Johnston portion of the project involves a Data Center upgrade, a Greenhouse expansion and a Parent Seed facility expansion.  The expansion also includes the new "Fast Corn" project.  The total estimated investment in Johnston is $33 million in facilities and equipment.
