Chamber  Message

Todd Cate

The Johnston Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual “Green Days” community celebration June 19-22.  This will mark the 12th consecutive year that event has been held.  This year’s activities will once again take place next to the Johnston Library, located at 6700 Merle Hay Road in Johnston

Why is it called Green Days?  When the event was started in 1996, it focused on Johnston’s agricultural and horticultural tradition. The Chamber worked with Johnston’s many nursery and greenhouse operations, local garden clubs and other groups, to start this tradition — and helped it grow to be one of Iowa’s leading summer festivals.

Throughout the year the Chamber hosts and sponsors many different events.  Green Days is by far the largest and offers a wide variety of activities for all ages.  Green Days features a parade, a carnival, activities for children and teens, and nightly entertainment with no admission fee.  Green Days also provides an opportunity for our local restaurants to be featured at a “Taste of Johnston” on Thursday the 19th.  On Saturday the 21st there will be many things to see and do including the Fireman’s Breakfast, a Classic Car Show, a Public Safety Expo, a Cookie Bake-off, Bike Races, Farm Olympics, and the Bill Riley Talent Search.

This year’s lineup of bands at the Street Dances held each evening will be:

June 19th, Thursday - 5:00-7:00 pm - Johnston Station Jazz Band
8:00-10:00 pm – SPAM

June 20th, Friday -      D.J. until 7:30 pm
8:00-12:00 am - Standing Hampton

June 21st, SaturdayD.J. until 7:30 pm
6:00-10:00 pm- MYC Music Collective (in the Simpson Barn)

8:00-12:00 pm- Tony Valdez Band

As with all of the events the Chamber hosts, Green Days requires the support of its member businesses.  Through their generous support we are able to grow and improve Green Days each year.  Please make note of those businesses, which will be displayed at Green Days and in local print media, and say thank you by supporting them.  Without their help it would not be possible for Johnston to hold a festival that we can all be proud of, such as Green Days.

Green Days is almost entirely staged and operated by volunteers.  We would like to thank them and their businesses for allowing them the time to contribute.  In particular, I would like to thank Deb Bengtson of First Bank and Sue Harney of Polk County Bank for acting as co-chairs for this year’s event.

The money raised by Green Days allows the Chamber to give back to the community.  Some projects funded by Green Days in recent years include the roofing of the Simpson Barn, holiday lighting displays, and updated street banners.  The Chamber has also contributed to organizations such as Character Counts and the Art Departments of the Johnston Community Schools.  In addition, Green Days provides a means to fund two scholarships each year for graduating Johnston High School seniors.

For more information visit the Green Days website at www.johnstongreendays.org or call the Johnston Chamber of Commerce office at 276-9604.

We look forward to seeing all of you at Green Days.  There is something for everyone!!!

Todd Cate

President, Johnston Chamber of Commerce

JEDCO News

Regional Workforce Study Published
You may have read in recent news articles that a workforce shortage is here.
Readers of this newsletter may remember that two short years ago the area economic development organizations sponsored a study to provide employers with information about the workforce in Johnston and the Des Moines region.  That study has been updated for 2008.

The purpose of the study is to gain a better understanding of the makeup of the workforce in the region and in individual communities.  It can help guide strategies to strengthen the source of future employees for our key industries and companies, and demonstrate the extent to which a region has the capacity to fill positions in a growing economy.  You can download the Johnston report from the Johnston Economic Development website.  Once again, you'll see that we have reason to be thankful for the quality of the companies and jobs that are located in Johnston.  Thanks to the Greater Des Moines Partnership and MidAmerican Energy for their sponsorship of these studies.
